1. Kings Park
Kings Park is one of the world’s largest inner city parks, located along Perth, Western Australia’s Swan River and overlooking its central business district. Offering activities and sights for family enjoyment such as walking trails, picnic areas and children discovery playgrounds; beautiful city skyline views in the distance; impressive gardens as well as native Australian plants make this park truly unforgettable!
Kings Park comes to life each evening with an extraordinary light display called Lightscape, which showcases medium and large scale installations amongst shady trees, iconic glass bridge, tranquil waterways and idyllic waterways. A curated path guides visitors along this display while passing by illuminated installations featuring models, neon lighting, fire and lasers.
The Western Australian Botanic Garden is a favorite with locals and visitors, particularly during spring when its blossoming displays over 3,000 species and presents the world’s largest display of Western Australian flora.
Kings Park boasts many attractions that draw crowds to it such as the State War Memorial Cenotaph, Court of Contemplation, Eternal Flame and Pool of Reflection – these draws draw large numbers during annual ANZAC Day ceremonies at sunrise as well as Remembrance Day services.
Kings Park is easily accessible by car or bus and free to enter. Spend at least two hours exploring all its nooks and crannies; Kings Park Volunteer Guides offer free guided walks throughout its perimeter of varying lengths; brochures are also available at both Visitor Centre and Aspects of Kings Park gallery shops.
2. Fremantle Markets
Fremantle Markets are one of the best places to discover local culture and pick up fresh local produce. Constructed in 1897 in Federation Romanesque style and heritage listed by state governments, Fremantle Markets offer live music performances as well as exhibitions of handmade wares by artists. Fremantle Markets remain one of the top tourist spots, making for an enjoyable trip!
Markets are held every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday public holiday with an incredible atmosphere that you won’t want to miss. They feature an impressive range of stalls selling souvenirs, clothing, fresh seafood and local arts and crafts; be sure to arrive early as these markets tend to fill up fast starting around midday!
One of the highlights is a special painted piano located at one of the entry points that you can hop right on and start playing, providing a fun way to meet new people and discover the local community. South Beach Fremantle Sunset Markets should also not be missed on sunny days – live music, a variety of food stalls selling delicious meals and the chance to swim at sunset are just a few attractions you will discover there!
The city itself offers a plethora of shopping experiences, ranging from large malls and department stores to quirky boutiques. If you want something truly out-of-the-ordinary, head for Northbridge where quirky fashions, Aboriginal art and stylish accessories await. Or head into one of its suburbs such as Leederville, Subiaco Mount Lawley Claremont for smaller hotspots.
3. Perth Zoo
Perth Zoo provides an exciting and educational day trip for families. Established in 1898, this zoological park houses exotic animals from across the globe as well as playing an active role in wildlife conservation. Since its establishment, Perth Zoo has grown into one of Western Australia’s top tourist attractions.
The park is organized into three major precincts – African Savannah, Asian Rainforest and Australian Bushwalk – each designed to replicate an animal’s natural habitat. With over 1,000 animals representing 164 different species at our zoo!
Highlights of the park include Birds of Prey and Reptile Encounter. It also offers several “Eye to Eye” experiences where visitors can interact directly with some animals; some experiences are offered daily while others only on certain days. Furthermore, the zoo offers other activities and amenities including carousel ride, zebra car rides, keeper presentations as well as free electric BBQ’s and picnic tables – so visitors have an array of ways to spend their time.
Perth Zoo is home to more than mammals and birds; among its diverse resident species are tarantulas, whistling tarantulas and spiny leaf insects – to name but three!
Visitors who want to gain more knowledge about the animals at the zoo can visit the Information Hub near the entrance, which provides visitors with hours of animal facts they can download directly onto an iPod, MP3 player or mobile phone via Talking Zoo. Wheelchair hire, wagon rental and lockers with small refundable deposits are also provided as are change facilities, baby feeding courtyards and a children’s pull-along wagon.
4. The Swan River
The Swan River runs through Perth and serves as home for various water-based activities and wildlife. It’s also an attractive destination for walking, cycling, dining and relaxing on its banks. At the edges of this river are numerous activities to enjoy – jogging along its paths, fishing and sailing are among the many. Plus, this waterway makes an ideal place for relaxing on its banks with a book or enjoying delicious seafood from one of the many restaurants lining its banks.
